Dakota Dawson, Bastyr trained doula

birth doula services for home or hospital births

I am a Mother of 5, 4 of which I've given birth to myself. My kids and my husband are the center of my world. I love the miracle of birth and the privilege of working with expectant families. I’ve been both a birth and postpartum doula for 6 years now. I did my formal training at Bastyr University as both a birth Doula and in Childbirth Education. I was also a trained EMT, and First Responder. Someday, I hope to become a midwife or labor and delivery nurse. For now, my heart is in helping families have positive and supported birth experiences.

I believe birth is a natural event that our bodies are designed for.  I believe that your best birth experience, is one where you are continually supported by a compassionate team that listens to what you need, is trained in birthing skills, and deeply cares for your well being.

A positive birth experience lays a beautiful foundation for your growing family.  Birth is an extremely vulnerable, yet powerful time.  My intention is to provide nurturing and compassionate support to you and your family and help you achieve your ideal birth experience as you see it.

Offering doula services for Hospital births

What an amazing journey pregnancy and birth can be! Becoming a parent for the first time or welcoming another member into your family is an extraordinary event. I remember the moment I met my child after his birth and it took my breath away. Ever since birth work drew me in I have fallen in love with it more and more. I love building relationships with clients before their big day, helping families to make informed evidence-based decisions during labor, supporting women, their partners and families through birth and helping them to adapt to life with a new baby.

I am a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) through the North American Registry of Midwives and soon-to-be LDM (Licensed Direct Entry Midwife) in Oregon. My experience in birth work began through doula training and certification at Birthingway College of Midwifery where I also completed my three year midwifery program and learned childbirth education and breastfeeding support. I began attending births in 2012 for clients birthing in hospital and home settings. My clinical midwifery experience was completed at Alma Midwifery in Portland, Oregon where I was a student and Assistant Midwife supporting clients through prenatal, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding care. I am certified in adult CPR and neonatal resuscitation and am trained in emergency labor, birth and postpartum management. I am thrilled to also be a practicing midwife here at Mandala Midwifery.

I offer free consultations so we can become acquainted, you can ask questions about me and learn more about what I offer during your labor and postpartum period. After this meeting I scedule two-three more prenatal visits that include helping you create a birth plan, practicing comfort techniques for labor, answering questions about the labor process and reviewing commonly used interventions and protocols in the hospital setting that you may encounter during your birth. As soon as you need help during labor I will be there to support you with massage, labor positions, rebozo techniques, encouragement and guidance for knowing when it is time to go to the hospital. I stay with you through your active labor until your baby is born, and through the first few hours of your immediate postpartum. Around 24 hours I come to support you in the hospital with breastfeeding, and again at one-two weeks postpartum to continue with breastfeeding support, newborn care, self care and to process your birth story with you. If parents wish to have support beyond these visits, I offer postpartum doula services for an hourly fee.

I believe having dedicated support through each step of your birth can greatly improve your journey as you navigate through labor and the transition into motherhood. I believe you are strong and capable of anything and deserve someone dedicated to helping you accomplish the birth experience you desire. Birth is a unique, life-changing event for every woman who journeys through it’s unfolding. It is with great gratitude and excitement that I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on the journey ahead!
